About the West Thurrock Riverside Development Brief
Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation has appointed Entec UK Ltd to prepare detailed proposals for the West Thurrock Riverside area which will be used to guide development up to 2021. The proposals build upon the existing Master Plans for Purfleet and Lakeside and West Thurrock.
West Thurrock Riverside is located within the heart of the Thames Gateway, one of the Government’s Growth areas identified within the Sustainable Communities Plan. The study area is therefore considered to be a key sub-region for future employment and economic growth. The Development Corporation is keen to ensure that a strong employment focus is retained in this area and that opportunities for the diversification of the Borough’s economy are also exploited.
Study Area
The study area stretches from the ESSO tank farm in Purfleet, eastwards beyond the QEII Bridge and on to Procter & Gamble in West Thurrock. It is bounded to the south by the River Thames and to the north by London Road. West Thurrock Riverside is a vital employment area for the Borough with a variety of industrial, distribution, petro-chemical, aggregates and storage facilities including some of Thurrock’s major employers. However, as well as the active uses West Thurrock Riverside also contains over 100Ha of derelict or underused land and pockets of habitat rich grassland and woodlands. In addition the southern part of the West Thurrock Marshes is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
