Press Release
Entec to roll out EMS for Defra sites

Issue date: 19 February 2004

Entec has been commissioned by Defra to support the rollout of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) based on ISO 14001 to core and Agency sites as part of Defra’s commitment to the Framework for Sustainable Development on the Government Estate.
Entec will help develop EMS at Defra sites and across 6 of its Agencies by means of introductory presentations, workshops, procedure reviews, training, delivery of an IEMA approved internal EMS auditor course, system auditing, progress checks and even running a dedicated help-line at Entec’s Leamington office.

The Framework for Sustainable Development, managed by Defra itself, aims to improve the performance of the Government Estate and will eventually cover all the key environmental and social impacts of running the various departments. The Framework has developed (or is developing) further targets focussing on water use, waste generation, energy use, green travel, procurement, estates management, biodiversity and social issues. EMS implementation will ensure the targets and commitments are managed in these areas as they are issued. For mainly office-based estates, EMS will be in place to cover all main offices and 40% of mainly mixed or non-office estate by 31 March 2004. A target of 2006 is set for wider rollout.

Agencies involved at this stage include the Central Science Laboratory, Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Veterinary Laboratories Agency and the Rural Payments Agency.

Entec Project Manager Matthew Greaves said, “We are delighted to be supporting Defra in meeting their sustainable development commitments. Entec has a strong track record supporting central government, regional government and Agencies. This ensures that our experienced project team will work effectively with Defra and its Agencies in developing EMS in a smart and user friendly format.”
