Defra Appoints Entec to Assist Local Authorities Improve Recycling Rates
Issue date: 21 January 2005
Defra has appointed Entec to the Local Authority Support Unit (LASU) call-off contract as part of the wider Waste Implementation Programme (WIP). The support unit aims to assist local authorities to meet, or exceed, their requirements under the EU Landfill Directive.
WIP was set up in June 2003 by Defra with the aim of diverting biodegradable municipal waste from landfill and to work towards meeting the requirements of Article Five of the EU Landfill Directive.
LASU is one of eight WIP programmes and is funding some £2.5M of local authority projects targeted at improving recycling rates by providing best practice guidance and toolkits in waste management. A further £2M of local authority support is anticipated each year for the next 2 years.
So far, Entec has been commissioned to assist a number of local authorities to deliver a range of waste compositional, waste strategy and waste audit projects. Currently, Entec is working with Greater Manchester WDA, Cumbria County Council, Gloucestershire County Council, Fylde District Council, Dover District Council, Bedfordshire County Council and Dorset County Council to deliver these projects by April 2005. These projects were approved and resourced by Defra's Waste Implementation Programme Local Authority Support Unit.
Entec’s Contract Director, Francis Crozier, said: “Local
authorities need to address the challenge of improving recycling rates if they
are to play their part in providing a more sustainable approach to waste management.
LASU is an important part of the programme that has been put in place to help
achieve this.”
