Wear Valley Project Scoops 11th Award

Issue date: 26 October 2005

The Wear Valley water treatment works project has won its 11 th award, this time from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Northern Branch. The awards scheme entered by Entec on behalf of the Wear Valley Water Partnership, which includes Northumbrian Water, Montgomery Watson and Casella, is run annually in order to recognise, celebrate and publicise good planning practice in the North of England.

The water treatment works, near Wearhead in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is designed to look like a traditional group of farm buildings. RTPI Judge Chris Clarke said: “The detailed pre-planning work has lead to an exemplary scheme, including the new Water Treatment Works (partly underground), new dry stone walls and tree planting, a small new nature reserve on the site of the demolished old works buildings, and a new route for walkers, alongside the reservoir.”

There were two main areas of the project that impressed the RTPI judges: the substantial Environmental Statement carried out before the scheme was approved, and the very high standard of implementation that followed.

The award was presented by Ron Tate, the President of the RTPI, at the Wear Valley site on 14th October. Entec’s project manager Steve Bulcock said: “Having been involved with this project since its inception in 1999, it is praise indeed to receive this award from the RTPI for a development in such an environmentally sensitive area.”
