Entec goes Tidal with Alderney Renewable Energy
Issue date: 17 October 2005
Entec has been awarded a contract with Alderney Renewable Energy (ARE) to provide environmental advice and Terms of Reference to develop Alderney for tidal power projects. Alderney, in the Channel Islands, has one of Europe’s optimum sites for harnessing tidal power, and ARE has exclusive rights relating to tidal power there.
ARE intends to place Alderney at the forefront of tidal power development by attracting technology developers to test single tidal power generators and small farms in Alderney’s waters during the next 5 years. The ARE site is at the northern end of the notorious 9 knot tidal race called ‘The Swinge’.
ARE has commissioned Entec to carry out a number of baseline environmental assessments. The first of these has resulted in draft Terms of Reference for marine mammal and ornithological baseline studies. This included identification of key sensitive species, including identification of appropriate survey methods, and locations and timings for use in later impact assessments of specific tidal devices.
Alderney, which is just 5.6km long and 2km wide, is 95km from UK mainland and only 13km from France. Although it is a dependency of the British Crown, Alderney is a self governing, democratic territory, and not part of the EU and is therefore subject to neither British nor European legislation.
Entec’s project director Paul Reaston said “Overall, Alderney represents an interesting challenge in terms of its size, location, legislation and potential tidal power resource, as well as its island economy and ecology.”
