Press Release
Planning Success for Middlesbrough College

Issue date: 20 April 2006

Entec has secured planning permission for the new Middlesbrough College campus at Greater Middlehaven. Entec managed the preparation of a planning and transport statement, travel plan framework and environmental report, regeneration statement and pollution and energy statement, as well as the submission of the planning application.

Since its merger with Teesside Tertiary College in 2002, Middlesbrough College has operated from four campuses. This current arrangement has given rise to operational difficulties, with some curriculum areas dispersed across a number of campuses. Coupled with the prohibitive costs associated with refurbishment, it was clear to the college that it was necessary to relocate to a single campus if it was to continue to meet learning needs and raise levels of attainment.

The grant of outline planning permission for the mixed-use development of the first phase of the regeneration of Greater Middlehaven was secured by Entec on behalf of regeneration company Tees Valley Regeneration in May 2005. This planning permission, which included educational uses, paved the way for the relocation to Middlehaven.

The new college building will be of a contemporary design that has been inspired by its dockside location. The main façade is dominated by a striking stainless steel strip cladding of matt gold finish and provides a statement of quality that sets the benchmark for the future development of Middlehaven.

The building will have a floor area of some 30,000sqm and will cater for over 17,000 students. With Middlesbrough College’s policy of encouraging community use of appropriate facilities, the development will also add to the availability of community facilities in the area. Construction is due to start this summer for completion in 2008.

Entec Project Manager Luke McDonald said, “I was very impressed with the absolute commitment of Middlesbrough College to meeting and improving the standard of learning for its students. The new Middlehaven Campus will provide a state-of-the-art facility that will set the college well underway to realising and even exceeding its ambitions. It has been terrific to be involved in assisting such a dedicated team achieve planning permission.”
