Exploring Logistics for Recycling Opportunities

European legislation and national waste policy, requiring diversion of material from landfill and increased recycling, are leading to growing pressure on local authorities to ensure that municipal solid waste is managed in a sustainable way.

Entec has recently started work on a study funded by Cory Environmental, through The Recycling Consortium, to develop logistics models for waste collection and recycling activities across the county of Gloucestershire.

This is a novel project that satisfies approved object C of the Landfill Tax Regulations. The proposed work will result in a better understanding of the logistics impact of municipal solid waste management in Gloucestershire, as well as an improved body of data upon which future strategies and recycling plans can be built.

Following the successful completion of a stakeholder workshop, models of waste collection arrangements are being developed, followed by recycling scheme scenario analysis and project dissemination early in 2004.

The study builds on an expanding portfolio of projects undertaken through Entec’s waste logistics consultancy service, in conjunction with logistics software experts Webaspx, which was launched last year. This analyses the logistics of handling waste and addresses how best to manage the collection, transfer, treatment and onward supply of materials in any regional waste management system.
