Sustainable Buildings Accolade

In the 2003 Royal Town Planning Istitute (RTPI) Planning Awards, Entec received recognition in the 'Planning for Sustainability' category for preparing the Supplementary Planning Guidance on Sustainable Buildings for Westminster City Council.

In their summing up, the Judges commented:

"The sustainable development task is normally addressed at the strategic level or in general statements of policy. We were impressed by the way that Westminster has taken the issue forward to a more detailed and practical level. We consider the guidance to be wide-ranging in its content and user-friendly in its layout and presentation".

The document recognises that buildings contribute to over 50% of total CO2 emissions in the UK. Like many cities, Westminster is anxious to provide practical advice on how sustainable buildings, both large and small, can be built within their area.

As well as reducing emissions, buildings that incorporate sustainable design are healthy, safe and productive places for people to use. Sustainable design is also cost effective over the whole life of a building.

The guidance picks up policies in the Council's Unitary Development Plan and then addresses issues of Design, Energy, Air Quality, Water and Drainage, Landscape and Wildlife, Transport, Waste, Building Materials, Noise and Site Practices. It is presented in a colour-coded, user-friendly format which was designed in-house by Entec. Copies of the publication are available to purchase from Westminster City Council, telephone 0207 641 3969.
