Entec at BWEA27

Entec is to speak at BWEA27: Embrace the Revolution, the wind industry’s 27th annual conference in Cardiff on 18-20th October 2005. The publication of TAN8, the Welsh Assembly’s new national planning policy on renewable energy, has led to a renaissance of the Welsh Assembly's commitment to renewable energy, along with the recognition that wind will lead the way to 2010. It's been seven years since BWEA last held its annual conference and exhibition in Wales, and the time is right to revisit and embrace the renewables revolution.

Over 100 speakers will present in the main plenary sessions and technical sessions covering onshore and offshore wind along with wave and tidal energy issues. Topics will include finance & the RO, development considerations, grid, project delivery, health & safety, technical issues, the regions, supply chain and small wind systems.

Entec’s Rob Driver is to speak at a main plenary session discussing grid issues on Tuesday 18th October. Rob will be discussing ‘shallowish’ connection charging for embedded generators – theory versus reality. The UK Government is trying to encourage the small-scale generation of electricity using technologies such as renewables, CHP and fuel cells. Smaller generators feed energy into the local electricity distribution network, but the cost of getting connected to these networks can be prohibitive. To address this problem, Ofgem introduced a new charging regime for generator connections in April 2005. This paper reviews the aims of the new charging framework, and questions whether these aims are being achieved in practice.

Other speakers at the conference include the Rt Hon Peter Hain, Secretary of State for Wales, Malcolm Wicks MP, UK energy minister, as well as speakers from a range of organisations such as Scottish Power, NPower Renewables, the Carbon Trust, Friends of the Earth and the DTI.
