Defra Appoints Entec to Help Put Noise on the Map

Entec has recently been awarded two contracts to develop noise maps covering the Manchester and Liverpool/Birkenhead conurbations, a total area of around 2000 km². The work, which will be carried out in conjunction with Hepworth Associates, will form part of Defra’s ‘Noise Mapping England’ project, which will map out noise levels along major roads and in over 20 major towns, cities and regions throughout England. The idea is to identify, in simple terms, where people are affected by noise, how many are affected, and what the source of the noise is.

It marks a key phase in the Government’s plan to map noise from roads, railways, aircraft and industrial sites across England. The ultimate aim of the project is to provide strategic information on the current noise climate across England.

The new maps follow the one already produced for London. Local Environmental Quality Minister, Ben Bradshaw, said “By creating more of these maps we can help Government, local authorities, planners and the public better understand noise levels and work more efficiently to reduce the number of people who are exposed to high levels of noise.”

Entec’s project manager Neil Thurston said “Entec welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the Noise Mapping England project and ultimately help enhance the management of noise exposure across the country.”
