Entec Helps Lead the Carbon Challenge
The Carbon Challenge is being run by English Partnerships (EP) on behalf of Communities and Local Government (CLG) in order to equip the house building industry with the skills and technology needed to meet the goal set by the government that all new homes will be zero carbon by 2016. In particular, the Challenge will act as a testing ground for the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes and the new Planning Policy Statement on climate change.
The Carbon Challenge builds on the lessons learnt from other cutting-edge environmental programmes, such as Design for Manufacture and the Millennium Communities, and sets targets to drive down construction costs and minimise waste generated through the house building process. The programme aims to fast-track the creation of a number of zero carbon or near zero carbon developments and will demonstrate that well-designed, high quality homes can achieve high levels of environmental performance in truly sustainable communities. The results of the programme will blaze a trail for the wider house building market to follow by showing that sustainably-designed homes can be produced for the mass market.
Entec’s Sustainable Design Group, an integrated team that includes experts in the fields of urban design and architecture, energy, water, waste and materials, ecology and management, is part of the Carbon Challenge Network which is a partnership with the CLG, EP and other advisory bodies such as the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Energy Saving Trust (EST) and Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). Entec’s role is to act as lead consultant to the Carbon Challenge Network through:
