Phil Davies Weekend 2004

In another highly successful Phil Davies Memorial weekend, over one hundred Entec staff, partners and children came to YHA Grasmere in the Lake District to enjoy the usual mix of good company, friendly competition and the opportunity to get out into the great outdoors.

Nigel Crowe's ever popular Snake Maze, an orienteering-cum treasure hunt event, allowed the more physically fit to get up onto the fells while others had a more leisurely stroll around Grasmere village, looking for fiendishly hidden clues to the riddle of the Maze.

Another event quickly gaining notoriety is the fun run, though a slight miscalculation by the handicapper meant that triathlete Jim Kersey started just as the winner, Simon Clouston, was finishing!

New features this year included an optional, professionally organised activity session with choices including rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and gorge scrambling, and one of Brian Crow's famous quizzes.

The Grasmere hostel had extensive grounds and within minutes of arriving, children were forming gangs and disappearing together - freeing parents to, well, act more like children! One of the features about the weekend remains its appeal to families, couples and singles alike.

The centrepiece was the tremendous Saturday night barbecue, and as the night closed in we once more drank a toast to Phil's memory and his legacy to Entec. As with last year, we were delighted to have Nicola and Hilary Davies with us, and Nicola wrote after to say how much they both loved the weekend and enjoyed being with the "wonderful Entec people". Next year's venue is already booked: Borrowdale, 25-26 June. It's a great way to get to know your colleagues.
