Corbett Challenge
On Saturday 18th September three teams of intrepid walkers from the Entec Shrewsbury office were amongst 173 teams from across the UK, including many from Northumbrian Water, who took part in this years Water Aid Corbett Challenge. For those of you not in the know, the challenge was to put a team of walkers on the top of all 110 Corbetts - mountains over 2500 feet - in England and Wales between 12pm and 2pm on the day of the challenge.
The Shrewsbury contingent chose three Corbetts in the Lake District, Swirl How, Grey Friar and Wetherlam - immediately to the north of the Old Man of Coniston. Despite a dismal weather forecast and a very wet night under canvas on the Friday night, the challenge was a great success. As if by divine intervention, as the teams took to the hills on Saturday morning the skies cleared. There are even rumours of patches of sunshine! All three teams completed their challenge within time, although it was touch and go for the Grey Friar team who were almost mown down by a pack of fell runners!
All teams arrived safely back at the RV (The Drunken Duck) and then retired to the campsite for a well deserved rest and barbecue.
The three teams will have raised over £500 for Water
aid to contribute to a total of an estimated £50,000 for this year’s
challenge.
