Calshot Activity Weekend

A broad mix of people from different Entec offices took part in the weekend at Calshot Activity Centre on the shores of the Solent. Being mostly city types, on hearing the place was in the New Forest, we naturally assumed it was in a forest. Not so. Two large houses sat on a gravel spit in the Solent were our dorms, and three huge hangers nearer the sea were the indoor activity centres.

The weekend started well with warm beers on the beach until the early hours, most people just enjoying being out of the car and out of the office and being blown about by a stiff sea breeze. What better way to prepare for dexterity, agility and mental tests at 9.30 the next morning.

Three teams were randomly chosen beforehand, comprising 8/9 people per team. Tasks ranged from moving a nuclear bomb, blindfolded and led by your sighted team mates who couldn’t touch any of the equipment, through carrying glasses of water around an assault course, to crossing a pool using only ropes. Luckily, injuries were restricted to rope burns. An exhausting day was followed by a pub quiz and a few drinks and then onto the beach again, with the usual antics and apparently some Olympic standard gymnastics!

Sunday was more relaxed with archery, wall-climbing and skiing, and outdoor sailing and kayaking. The day was another beautiful, sunny day and almost a flat calm, so the kayakers laughed as sailors went nowhere.

Overall the place was amazing, there was the injection of sea air and exercise which left everyone thoroughly worn out. Same again next year or do we now have to up the ante...?
