Entec Medal Goes for Gold
The 11th IChemE Annual Awards ceremony took place at the newly-refurbished Christ Church Spitalfields in London on 28th September 2004. Hosted by Michael Portillo, the event promoted innovation and rewarded success in the process industries.
Nine awards were presented culminating with the evening’s top award, the Entec Medal for Excellence in Safety and the Environment. The medal went to a multi-disciplinary collaboration between Johnson Matthey, Imperial College and Cardiff University whose novel synthesis of hydrogen peroxide really impressed the judges from a quality list of more than sixty entries. In this newly developed process gold catalysts open the way to make hydrogen peroxide directly from hydrogen and oxygen which has potential application in fine chemical synthesis as well as bleaching and cleaning applications.
Entec has sponsored the award for several years, known until 2002 as the Cremer & Warner Medal. The medal was presented by a kilted Rob Brown, Entec’s recently-appointed sector developer in the oil & gas and industrial sectors.
In addition to handing over the Entec Medal, we were part of a project on the receiving end: Northumbrian Water’s Wear Valley water treatment works carried off the Foster Wheeler Award for innovation in project management. The project, which included detailed design, EIA work and site supervision by Entec, was regarded as a benchmark performance in the vital area of stakeholder engagement.
