Entec Six-a-Side Football Tournament – “Perky in the Pink”
The fourth annual Entec 6-a-side football tournament was held in Manchester on 11th June. It was again very pleasing to see a strong turnout with twelve teams from seven Entec offices, including the first-time appearance of Real Reading. As is the norm, there was a variety of skill levels but no shortage of enthusiasm, and matches were played with a mix of healthy competition and good humour. Six teams asserted their superiority quite quickly, and when the Old Infirm and Glasgow fell just shy of the semis the bookies started slashing the odds on a Shrewsbury or Northwich side taking home the prize.
At the other end of the ladder being miserly in defence wasn’t enough to keep London’s Lazy Lobbers or the valiant Management side from being pitted against one another in a battle of the minnows. While the management were bereft of their first-choice ‘keeper Sophie Pickup through an early injury, the lobbers avoided being presented with a small wooden spoon and a large bottle of White Lightning, but only after a penalty shootout. The Champagne Moment of the tournament was awarded to Reading’s Andrea Nicolle for her goalkeeping heroics, with an honourable mention to Christoph Hugi and his technicolour trousers.
Meantime, the two sides that had topped their respective
pools marched on despite some tough opposition in the semis. Shrewsbury 1 and
Northwich Perky met in
the final. This was always going to be close, and in the end a single goal
carried the day for Dean Meadows’ Northwich Perky. Both sides should
be applauded for some quality football during the afternoon.
