Athletico Aces – The Entec 6-A-Side Football Tournament
The fifth annual Entec 6-a-side football tournament was held in Manchester on Saturday 17th June. Again it was very pleasing to see a strong turn out from with 12 teams from five Entec offices, plus “the management”. As is the norm, there was a variety of skill levels but no shortage of enthusiasm, and matches were played with a healthy mix of competition and good humour. The fierce heat and humidity in the indoor arena gave the event the feel of a mini World Cup, though without the WAGs.
As the tournament progressed and teams got matches under their belt, players began to gel and the games became more competitive, however two sides peaked at the right time and marched on despite some tough opposition in the quarters and semis: Shrewsbury Athletico and Gosforth ASBO’s met in the final. This was always going to be close, and there was nothing to separate the sides with the score a dense 0-0 affair after normal time. It duly went down to penalties, a lottery as we all know, with Shrewsbury coming out on top thanks to Francis Crozier’s Ricardo-like performance. Both sides should be applauded for some good quality football during the afternoon.
It was good to see representatives from London and
Northwich at an informal gathering in Manchester on Saturday night – a
great chance to meet new people and sink a few / a lot (delete as appropriate)
refreshing drinks. A
special mention goes out to John Gullick who broke the tendons in his shoulder
and still managed to socialise in the evening and Mike Banner who bravely played
on after dislocating his finger in the first match.
