Entec at IChemE Awards 2006
The 13th annual IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) Awards Dinner was held on 5th October at the Banqueting House, Whitehall. Entec has sponsored the premier award for Safety & Environmental Excellence in the process industries since the start of the awards programme in 1994. The Entec Medal provides a climax to the award presentations. The awards dinner was hosted by popular science broadcaster Adam Hart-Davies.
The Banqueting House was a suitably grand setting for the awards dinner: it is all that remains of Whitehall Palace, the sovereign’s principal residence from 1530 until 1698 when it was destroyed by fire.
The Entec Medal was won by BP for its CO2 capture and storage project at the In Salah gas field, in the Algeria desert. In Salah is a joint venture between Sonatrach, the Algeria national energy company, BP and Statoil. Approximately 10% of the gas in the reservoir is made up of CO2. Rather than venting the CO2, which is the established practice on other projects of this type, the project involves compressing it and injecting it into wells 1800 metres deep in a lower level of the gas reservoir which is filled with water. Around one million tonnes of CO2 will be injected into the reservoir every year, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 200,000 cars off the road.
